It’s that time of year again, where the Fairluxury pledge opens up and I submit my goal to work on in my business to work towards better practices.
You may remember the pledge from last year; to improve studio practices by reducing waste produced from day-to-day activities; through reusing and recycling, changing processes from paper to digital where possible and sourcing chemical alternatives.
This is one I managed to achieve! Here’s some of the things I did;
- Cut down on the amount of paper waste produced, using digital planners, notepads and spreadsheets.
- Recycling and refining more materials.
- Changed packaging to be made from entirely natural materials and fully recyclable/compostable.
- Researched and found new eco-friendly alternatives to switch over to once I’ve used up what I’m using already. This includes chemicals and stationery.
What pledge to choose this year?
So, what to work on this year?
There’s a few things I’d like to achieve this year, but I reckon I’ll need to stick to just one (or two). Here’s some of the options I’ve considered:
1: To create a luxury unboxing experience that is sustainable, by being made from recycled materials and can be recycled thereafter. This includes stationery and wrapping elements.
Currently I’ve managed to make my packaging from sustainably sourced materials, including the boxes and those pesky inserts which I’ve found the majority are not made sustainably and can’t be recycled afterwards! I’d like to create luxury boxes for higher priced and bespoke pieces which are wrapped in eco-friendly materials, creating an eco-luxe aesthetic. I’d also like to create new stationery products including thank you notes which are more environmentally friendly too, possibly thinking about using ‘seed papers’.
2: To plant one tree for every order placed on the website with the option to plant trees for orders taken in person too.
It’s no surprise that planting trees is one of the best ways to help reduce our carbon footprint. Did you know that one acre of forest can absorb twice the CO2 produced by the average car’s annual mileage? I’m a huge supporter of rewilding our forests and it’s important that the correct mixture of habitation is provided to create the best environment possible and to encourage wildlife too. I’d really love to do what I can to help the climate change crisis and this seems like a great place to start!
3: To start the B-Corp journey.
This is a BIG goal. I know this is one that will take a while to work towards but I think starting the B Impact Assessment is a great place to start taking the first step. I’m pretty sure there will need to be improvements made along the way and from this assessment, and hoping there’ll be guidelines on what actions to be taken further, which may form part of other pledges in the future!
Honestly, I’d love to work on all of these this year! For my pledge though, I’m going to pick just one, which will make me accountable and ensure that I’m working towards a goal that is achievable instead of spreading myself thin!
What change did you want to see?
I’ve asked many of you for your opinions too and it was great to have so much feedback on the positive actions you’d like to see happening too!
There was a 50/50 split between creating an eco-luxe unboxing experience and planting a tree for every order. So ultimately the final decision came down to me. I’ve decided to commit to planting one tree for every order placed on the website, but I’m also going to extend this to planting a tree for every jewellery workshop booked too. By doing this, I hope to be able to plant more trees within a year.
As many of you may know, planting trees doesn’t mean that good things start happening straight away. Yes it’s a good first step, but it takes years before these trees will start having a significant impact on the environment. They need to be nurtured and managed before they have any kind of impact in removing carbon from the atmosphere and helping in the battle against climate change.
So, to summarise, this year my Fairluxury pledge is:
To plant one tree for every order placed both online and in-person, and for every workshop booked this year.Lindsay Forbes – Laconic
