I’m working on it! I’ve taken the Fair Luxury Pledge!
We all know we can be better — that’s one of the reasons why I made this pledge. I’m now among the first 60 people to have signed up to become a pledger to commit on taking action and actively make a difference.
What is the Fair Luxury Pledge?
The Fair Luxury Pledge was set up by Fair Luxury who are an independent collective of jewellery industry changemakers that work with individual designers, makers, traders and retailers. They encourage these businesses to make better decisions to create change within the industry; based on more than just profit. The purpose is to educate ourselves and create a discussion based on the challenges we face as an industry. No matter how big or small a business is, we can all be inspired to get involved. We need to make ourselves heard and get the resources that help us to start making changes and transform the industry.
Why is this important?
We normally gift jewellery as a way of expressing our love for each other. It is a thoughtful and considered purchase, and a way of expressing our personality and identity. Jewellery throughout history has been a way for people to showcase power and wealth. Why don’t we have a more thoughtful and considered approach in the jewellery making process? In the industry we have a supply chain that involves a lot of people and processes. Too often, a supply chain creating materials is harbouring social injustice and environmental destruction.
Travel has an important place in my practise, it inspires my work; experiencing other cultures and history has made me want to discover more about my own Scottish heritage. Being respectful to the land and people that live and work there is important, we should look after these places better. Everyone, everywhere, has their part to play in creating a world where we can look after each other and the environment.
It is possible to provide sustainable livelihoods for those involved in the jewellery industry; from the start of the supply chain with miners of raw materials to the creator/retailer of the jewellery itself. We can make this difference by producing jewellery responsibly.
I want to work in an industry that actively makes a difference to those who work within it. An industry that takes responsibility for its actions, ensuring safe working conditions and human rights. I want to work in an industry that works hard to conserve and restore the natural environment.
What does taking the pledge mean?
By making the Fair Luxury Pledge it shows our commitment to making changes through the jewellery we create and the ways we run our businesses. The promises made outline these 3 principles from the Fair Luxury website, we promise to:
- Conserve and restore the environment
- Work in a way that is responsible, transparent and accountable
- Play a role in educating and empowering others
What is your pledge?
My pledge is: To improve studio practises by reducing waste produced from day-to-day activities; through reusing and recycling, changing processes from paper to digital where possible and sourcing chemical alternatives.
What is your motivation for taking the Pledge?
I’m always looking for ways to do better and educate myself on best practises. I strive to create a business that looks after the environment and the people within it.
I’ve set myself a target of 3 months to make these changes. Do stay tuned to hear about my progress! I’ll be updating the website and creating more blog posts around sustainability and being more transparent about my processes too! I know I’m only one person running a small business. No matter how small, collectively our actions will make changes to transform the industry for the better.
