Confused by all the shop small campaigning going on right now? Wondering what all the fuss is about? Let me share some top points on the importance of shopping small from UK businesses this Christmas and why it benefits you.
Shopping small doesn’t mean purchasing smaller gifts (although we might need to find gifts to fit through the letterbox this year!) and it also doesn’t mean that gifting will be for fewer recipients either.
It’s about supporting small, independent businesses, and that doesn’t mean your local large chain/commercial store down the road. Sure, they’re local, but they are certainly not small!
There’s a huge variety of small independent businesses in the UK. We’ve been lucky here that our high streets still have small businesses on them and haven’t all been taken over by larger retailers.
So, what’s in it for you?
When you shop small there are many benefits for you as a customer. Here are my top 3:
- Personal Service
Whether in store or online, by shopping small you get to know the person behind the business and see the face of the company. In many cases, such as in my business, there’ll be one face for you to look at (apologies if you see it too often) as many small business owners are juggling a variety of roles themselves.
This means you can drop a message, find out more and ask questions whilst getting a quick and friendly response, from an actual human being.
- Shopping Experience
There’s so much passion put into building a small business that we want to share it with you. and really want you to enjoy it as much as we do! Without you lovely folks we simply wouldn’t exist!
There’s no big marketing budget so we rely on reviews, word of mouth and really want to listen to what you have to say so we can adapt and meet your needs.
- One-of-a-kind Gifts
How many times have you bought that same gift set with the slightly different packaging for someone? How many times have you forgotten which person received that same gift set last year?
Purchasing from a small business ensures that your gift will be as unique as the person you’re giving it to. It’ll have a story to tell, meaning they’ll have something that’ll be remembered and make them feel special.
Many small businesses can even tailor and customise something especially for you: if they make the products themselves, you can work with them to create something bespoke.
I know I’ll be shopping small this Christmas with more intention than I’ve ever had before because I really understand how important this is as a small business owner myself.
Here are some of my reasons why I think it’s so important:
- Supporting the Dream
Yeah, I did cringe writing that, but it’s soooo true. I’ve mentioned before: without you, I wouldn’t exist. Otherwise, small businesses may not have had the chance to get started and your support helps us get a foot in the entrepreneurial door.
- Supporting Bigger Dreams
I love what I do and I have big dreams and ambitions. As well as supporting other businesses myself, I want to support other people and causes that I care about too. When you support a small business, you’re also helping them to support their family, support their employees (and their employees’ families) as well as charities and communities.
- Sustainable Shopping
Did you know that for every £10 spent with a small business £50 is reinvested back into the local economy?
I found this interesting but not surprising. Small businesses tend to source suppliers more locally, which in turn cuts carbon emissions. If they have a local brick-and-mortar shop, this also means that you don’t have to travel far either, cutting emissions.
Many small businesses produce products that are well-crafted and made to last too, making this a sustainable option for shopping.
So, have I convinced you about the benefits of shopping small this Christmas?
Also, I’d like to add that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask small businesses questions. As a small business owner myself, I know that I love hearing from you!
If there’s anything that can make your Christmas shopping experience easier or more fun, then I’m more than happy to help. That’s true whether it’s about delivery times/dates, sending directly to the recipient or having it gift wrapped.
I’m here to help make this Christmas as special and stress-free as possible for you. I think we could all use some extra cheer and sparkle this year!
